An evening shadow are my days;
Like grass I wither soon away.
But you, Jehovah, sit enthroned
Forever; Your memorial
Abides through generations all.
Last week as I was reading through the story of Job, Psalm 102 1-12 (aka 102A in the Psalter) kept running through my head. And what an appropriate week to be reading Job. Although I'm not anywhere near as bad off as Job got, school and life does take it's toll. Somewhere between trying to turn a $35 dollar paycheck (result of a bad weather week as a flight instructor) into a $220 dollar rent payment and trying to nail down future plans in school and otherwise, God has taken many opportunities to remind me that his mercies are indeed new every morning. All I have to do is be thankful for where he has put me right now and trust him for the future. And I do have so many things to be thankful for! He has provided the means for me to get through college so far, and with only 30 credit hours left till I complete my Bachelors he's provided a job that uses my schooling that I can work while going to school up here, I have a loving family, awesome friends that love the Lord and encourage me on in him, good health, and my entire life ahead of me. The list just goes on. Sometimes it's important to just stop and thank God for all that he has provided already.
But you know, in what sounds like such a pitiful lament in the psalm above lies the key to true happiness. An evening shadow are my days; Like grass I wither soon away. When I think about the "issues" I deal with day to day in light of my life being "as an evening shadow", they just all seem so trivial. In two or three short years, college will be just a memory. In 70 more short years my life will just be a memory. But Jehovah will still be; and not only will he be, he will be unchanged. The key to my happiness is to live the short life I have here on earth in a way that will bring glory to God and advance his purpose and trust him for the rest.
Disclaimer: yeah I realize there will still be issues and stuff and all this isn't said to minimize that fact or life in general, but rather to give hope.
So anyway, some encouragement from the book of Job. I love how the psalms fit right in with these other passages of scripture. It's fun to be able to sing about something I had just been reading about in scripture. But anyway incase you couldn't tell from the sentence fragments, I'm pretty tired so we'll just leave it on that thought.
